Helen Elizabeth Green was born February 9th, 1931 in Alhambra, CA.  It was during the Depression and her parents had left Colorado to go to California seeking better opportunities.  They were flooded out and decided to come back to Colorado when Helen was only six weeks old.  Her father drove one vehicle and her mother drove another with Helen in a shoebox beside her.   She attended grade school in the Pueblo area.  Her parents eventually settled in Fowler.  Her older sister, Virginia, loved school and came home each day and taught Helen everything she had learned.  Eventually the teachers moved Helen up a grade because she had already been taught by Virginia.  Helen was active in many clubs, played a trumpet in band, played the piano and sang in numerous choral groups.  She was Miss Fowler in 1948 when the contest was based on horsemanship and she rode a horse in the parades.  She graduated from Fowler High School in 1948.  She attended University of Colorado for a while before changing to Pueblo Junior College.

She attended high school with James Barr.  They married on December 18, 1955.

They celebrated their 60th Anniversary in 2015.  James passed away in 2016.

They had three children, Sheryl, Carolyn (Jay Johnson) and Andrew; three grandchildren, Jacob (Thien), Wesley (Bethany) and Melissa (Chris) England; and a great-grandson, Greyson.

Helen’s children describe her as a steadfast, no nonsense, beyond practical person. She was a very devout Christian which she practiced by example.  She was very active in her children’s lives.  She was a Brownie Troop leader, helped with Girl Scouts, helped with Cub Scouts, started a Youth Choir at the Christian Church, started a Youth Fellowship at the Christian Church, periodically taught Sunday School and, for several years, ran Vacation Bible School.  She kept the books for several years for the Rainbow Girls and Chaperoned them to County and State Assemblies.  She and James served as Worthy Matron and Patron for Eastern Star.   She and James were 4-H Leaders for several years.  They also ran the Miss Fowler Contest for Missouri Day for several years.  They were members of White Shrine while living in Fort Collins.  They were active in CSU Alumni Association and many political campaigns. She loved watching sports and usually could quote player statistics.

Helen had a couple of interesting ‘firsts’ in her life.  She ate at the first McDonalds in Illinois.  She and James attended the first Bears game at DU Stadium.  The Bears later became the Broncos.  She and James had season tickets to the first Rockies season.

Helen, like most people, experienced good times and bad times.  When there were bad times, Helen would say, “You get knocked down, you get back up.  You get bucked off, you get back on, and life goes on”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all three siblings, her loving husband and a non-surviving son.

She was loved and she will be missed.  You are going home now Mom.

Graveside Service will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, May 7th in the Fowler Cemetery.  A Celebration of Helen's Life will follow at 2 PM in the Fowler United Methodist Church, 302 S. Main St., Fowler, Colorado.
