Thomas R. Smith, M.D.

Thomas R. Smith, M.D. died June 23, 2008 in Pueblo after a valiant two year struggle against lung cancer. He was born Sept 25, 1941 in Rocky Ford, CO to Bertha and Grady Smith of Fowler. He graduated from Fowler High School, Augustana College, Souix Falls, SD and the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at St Paul-Ramsey Hospital, the Minneapolis VA, and the University of Minnesota Hospitals. Upon finishing his medical training, he served in the U.S. Air Force at Hill AFB in Utah, before coming to Pueblo in 1973 where he practiced medicine for 33 years. He was a member of the Pueblo County Medical Society, the Colorado Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and King of Kings Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest son, David. His survivors include his wife Karen, three sons, Dr. Paul (Dr. Lisa) Smith, of Larkspur, Gregory (Diane) Smith, of Woodland Park, Daniel Smith of New York City and his daughter-in-law Dr. Karen Campbell, of Colorado Springs. He was the beloved ‘Papa” of Annika, Svea, Ella, Julianna, Ian and Amelia Smith. Also survived by five sisters, Mary Beth Asselin, Katherine Hahn, Joanne Rasmussen, Kirstine Mitchell, Gail Anderson and their families as well as a large extended family. The family wishes to thank their community of faith and friends for their love and support; they are priceless gifts. Cremation has taken place. The family also wishes to thank the Pastors and members of Praise Assembly of God, 2000 Troy Avenue, for sharing their large Worship Center where memorial services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Reverend Mark J. Crates will officiate. The Smith family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to King of Kings Lutheran Church or to the St. Mary-Corwin Health Foundation for the benefit of High Plains Oncology patients. Donations may be made directly or through the mortuary.
